    What Is a Baggage Allowance?

A baggage allowance is the amount of luggage an airline permits you to bring on board or check in without incurring additional charges. Every airline sets its own rules, and these can vary significantly depending on your ticket class, fare type, frequent flyer status, and the route you're flying.

Understanding your baggage allowance before you travel is essential. Exceeding size or weight limits can result in fees ranging from €20 to over €200 per bag, depending on the carrier. Worse, some items may be refused at the gate entirely if they don't meet the airline's specifications.

At LuggaGenius, we've researched the baggage policies of over 154 airlines worldwide so you don't have to. Use our allowance search tool for instant results, or read on for a complete overview of how baggage rules work.

    Types of Baggage Allowance

Most airlines categorise luggage into three main types. Each type has its own size, weight, and quantity limits that you need to be aware of.

    Carry-On Baggage

Brought into the cabin and stored in the overhead bin. Typical limits range from 7–10 kg, with dimensions around 55 × 40 × 20 cm.

    Checked Baggage

Stored in the aircraft hold. Weight limits typically range from 15–32 kg per bag, with linear dimensions up to 158 cm total.

    Personal Item

A smaller bag kept under the seat. Includes handbags, laptop bags, and small backpacks. Size limits are stricter and vary widely.

Dimensions vs. Weight: What Matters More?

Airlines enforce both size and weight limits, but the emphasis varies. European and Asian carriers tend to be strict about weight, while North American airlines focus more on linear dimensions (length + width + height).

For carry-on baggage, the most common maximum dimensions are 55 × 40 × 20 cm (22 × 16 × 8 in). However, budget carriers like Ryanair and Spirit Airlines enforce smaller limits, while premium carriers like Emirates and Singapore Airlines may allow larger cabin bags.

For checked baggage, the standard maximum is 158 cm (62 in) and 23 kg (50 lbs) in economy. Business and first class passengers typically receive a higher weight allowance of 32 kg (70 lbs) per bag.

    How Airlines Differ on Baggage

There is no universal baggage standard. Policies vary not only between airlines but also between routes, fare classes, and even booking channels. Here are the key factors that determine your allowance:

    • Airline type: Full-service carriers (British Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways) generally include checked bags, while budget airlines (Ryanair, Wizz Air, Spirit) charge separately.
    • Fare class: Economy light fares often exclude checked luggage. Premium economy, business, and first class typically include more bags at higher weight limits.
    • Route: Domestic flights may have different limits than international flights, even on the same airline. Transatlantic routes often allow more than short-haul European flights.
    • Loyalty status: Frequent flyer programme members often receive extra baggage allowance as a tier benefit, sometimes even on basic economy fares.

For detailed policy breakdowns by airline, explore our airline baggage policies section, or search for a specific airline using our allowance checker.

    Fees, Fare Types & Add-Ons

Baggage fees have become a significant revenue source for airlines. Understanding when and how to pay for additional luggage can save you substantial money. Pre-purchasing extra bags online is almost always cheaper than paying at the airport — sometimes by 50% or more.

Many travellers find that upgrading to a higher fare class that includes checked baggage is actually cheaper than buying bags separately on a basic fare. It's worth comparing the total cost before booking.

Read our complete guide on fees, fare types, and add-ons to learn how to minimise excess baggage charges.

    Restricted & Regulated Items

Aviation security regulations dictate what you can and cannot pack. Liquids in carry-on bags are limited to containers of 100 ml or less, all fitting within a single transparent resealable bag of no more than 1 litre. Sharp objects, flammable materials, and certain electronics (like spare lithium batteries over 100 Wh) have strict rules.

Rules can differ between countries and even individual airports. Our restricted items guide covers what's banned, what's allowed with conditions, and what you can pack freely.

    Special & Oversized Items

Travelling with sports equipment, musical instruments, mobility aids, or other non-standard items? These often require advance notice, special packaging, or additional fees. Some items may need to be transported as cargo rather than regular baggage.

Our non-standard luggage guide covers policies for bicycles, golf clubs, surfboards, wheelchairs, child car seats, and more.

    Connecting Flights & Mixed Itineraries

When your journey involves multiple airlines or a connection, baggage rules can get complicated. The "most significant carrier" rule means that the airline operating the longest segment typically determines the baggage allowance for the entire trip — but this doesn't always apply.

Self-connecting flights (booked on separate tickets) require you to collect and re-check your bags at each transit point. Read our connections guide to understand through-check policies, interline agreements, and how to avoid surprises at the gate.

    Travel Packing & Gear

The right luggage and packing strategy can make the difference between a stress-free trip and a costly one. Choosing a bag that precisely fits your airline's size limits, using packing cubes to maximise space, and weighing your bag before leaving home are simple steps that prevent problems at the airport.

Explore our travel packing and gear guides for expert advice on choosing luggage, packing efficiently, and preparing for specific types of trips. You can also use our packing checklist tool to make sure you never forget an essential.

    Your Rights as a Passenger

If your baggage is lost, damaged, or delayed, you have rights under international aviation conventions. The Montreal Convention entitles you to claim compensation of up to approximately €1,400 for baggage issues on international flights. EU regulation EC 261/2004 provides additional protections for flights departing from or arriving in the European Union.

Our claims and passenger rights guide explains how to file a claim, what documentation you need, and the timelines for each type of complaint.
